The Centrepiece design, created by renowned designer William Chan, is a living space concept that breaks free from conventional storage solutions. Inspired by the idea of movement, the design features turning, sliding, folding, and tilting planes that add a sense of dynamism and flexibility to the decor.
What sets Centrepiece apart is its unconventional approach to storage. Rather than hiding it away, a large and striking box is used to create a dramatic effect and free up space. This concept, known as "compartmentalization," allows for a bold and functional living space.
The Centrepiece design is realized using a combination of materials such as wood veneer, homogenous tile, vinyl floor, fabric, paint, plastic laminate, and blue-tinted glass finish. These materials not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also contribute to the functionality of the design.
With a total area of 1,152 sq ft, the Centrepiece design provides ample room for various activities. It features a bedroom, TV area, yoga room, and a walk-in closet/study. The container stretches from the hall to the main bedroom, visually lengthening the space and concealing the kitchen and bathrooms.
One of the standout features of Centrepiece is its versatility. Moveable planes are installed, allowing the owners to easily tweak their home decor as their needs evolve. Additionally, a pivoting dining table is cleverly stored in a side groove, maximizing space efficiency.
The design also incorporates innovative solutions for practicality. The TV wall, which hides the home theater and air-conditioning, uses a flip-door for surround sound effects when the air-conditioning is in use. Furthermore, a blue-tinted glass enlarges the yoga room's space while bringing in natural light.
The Centrepiece design project was completed between April and July 2011 at The Centris Condominium in Boon Lay, Singapore. The design team, led by William Chan of Spacedge Designs, successfully overcame the challenge of creating roomy storage space in a 1,152 sq ft condominium with load-bearing walls that could not be removed.
This groundbreaking design has received recognition in the industry. In 2013, Centrepiece was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate excellence in practicality, innovation, and meeting professional and industrial requirements.
The Centrepiece design by William Chan is a testament to the power of creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. It showcases the possibilities of creating functional and visually stunning living spaces, even within the constraints of limited square footage.
