Qidan Yan's Puli: A Revolutionary Safety Pill Bottle

Winner of the Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2020

The inspiration for Puli came from a need to create a safer pill bottle. Most existing safety pill bottles can be opened by experienced children, posing a potential risk. Qidan Yan sought to create a bottle structure that children would find difficult to open due to their lack of insight and strength. The design was inspired structurally by the screwing process and aesthetically by the hip flask. The flat bottle body not only gives users a hint to push and pull but is also easy to carry.

What sets Puli apart is its double-cap safety feature. The outer cap is connected to the inner cap by tracks. In its initial status, the outer cap can rotate freely while the inner cap remains stationary. For adults, by pushing the outer cap, the two caps engage via protrusion and depressions and can be rotated synchronously to open the bottle. However, for children, the narrower channel design makes it difficult for them to push the outer cap, thus ensuring the bottle's safety.

The Puli bottle was realized through injection molding using HDPE. The technical specifications of the design are a width of 80mm, a depth of 35mm, and a height of 98mm. The design process, which started in September 2019 and finished in February in China, faced challenges in finding the most suitable material and thickness for the outer cap. These factors were crucial in ensuring that children would find it difficult to pull the outer cap to open the bottle, but not too difficult for parents.

The Puli design has been recognized for its innovation and safety features. It was awarded Silver in the A' Packaging Design Award in 2020.
