Lin Lin's Tang Dynasty-Inspired Art Transforms W Hotel Xi'an

Award-winning designer Lin Lin brings history to life with contemporary art installations

The project, which started in the summer of 2017 and was completed in August 2018, features a variety of artworks that closely cooperate with the hotel's architecture and interior design. These include contemporary sculptures, art paintings, small sculptures, and contemporary multimedia videos. The artworks, made from modern materials such as metal, resin, and 3D printing, are a fusion of Xi'an's unique urban history, culture and the art narrative of the Tang Dynasty.

One of the unique features of Lin Lin's design is the interactive nature of the artworks. Although the sculptures, installations, and paintings are stationary, guests will find a subtle link between all the works. They tell a story, inspired by the culture of the Tang Dynasty and performed in a modern way, which fits the W spirit. The artworks have become a hot spot for the hotel, attracting guests to take photos and share their experiences.

The project was not without its challenges. The profound regional culture of the ancient capital brought unique artistic elements to the W hotel. Chinese contemporary artists had to collide and merge with eastern philosophy and world contemporary art, exploring the brand philosophy of W, temptation, escaping, and insiders, to form a strong contemporary art culture for the hotel.

Lin Lin's design has been recognized with a Silver A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2020. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
