Inspired by his wife's love for music and her request for a Music Chair, Stanley Clayne Sandström set out to design a chair that not only fulfilled a practical need but also served as a visual representation of the music that fills their home. The result is a stunning sculpture that captures the flow, dimension, and dynamics of music.
The Music Chair is composed of three main elements: the back, the legs, and the seat. Each element is carefully designed to mimic the movement and visual tone of music. The legs and back are constructed using a strong and lightweight steel box-frame technique, creating a minimalistic design that emphasizes the chair's artistic appeal.
Measuring 432 mm x 560 mm x 1320 mm (17 in x 22 in x 52 in), the Music Chair is made of steel for its raw strength and beauty. The treble and bass clef elements can be fabricated using exotic woods, laminates, or composites in future versions, adding a touch of luxury and sophistication to the design.
One of the key challenges in creating the Music Chair was the construction of the steel box-frame legs and back. This process involved precise cutting, welding, and the use of automotive body filler to achieve a smooth and flawless finish. The attention to detail and craftsmanship is evident in the final product.
When seated in the Music Chair, one can sense a unique fluid expression of motion. The simple cylindrical shape that joins the legs together gives the chair a sense of suspended freedom, allowing the user to experience the beauty and rhythm of music in a tangible way.
The Music Chair project began on December 14, 2015, and was completed just in time for Christmas morning. Throughout the design and construction process, Stanley Clayne Sandström relied on simple images of the treble and bass clefs and listened to inspiring music to fuel his creativity.
Recognized for its exceptional design, the Music Chair was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2016. This prestigious accolade is given to designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and adherence to industry standards. The Music Chair's integration of artistic expression and functional design truly contributes to a better world.
The Music Chair by Stanley Clayne Sandström is not just a piece of furniture; it is a work of art that celebrates the power, dimension, dynamics, and beauty of music. With its unique fluid expression of motion and suspended freedom, it offers a captivating experience for both the eyes and the soul.
