Organica: A Harmonic Composition of Art and Functionality

Fabrizio Constanza's Award-Winning Entrance Table Design Inspired by the Human Body

The human body, with its intricate systems and interconnected parts, serves as the primary inspiration for Fabrizio Constanza's 'Organica' – an entrance table that doubles as a utilitarian sculpture. This unique design, which blends various materials into a harmonious composition, was conceived for a private art gallery and has been recognized with a prestigious Golden A' Design Award.

Organica's uniqueness lies in its representation of the human body's central nerve system, respiratory system, circulatory system, and locomotor system. The design is a balanced interaction of weight, time, and motion. It combines heavy and light elements, contemporary and traditional influences, and static and fluid components. Every single component, from glass and stainless steel to aluminum, metal, and wood, is essential for the structural stability of the created system, much like the human body.

The creation of Organica involved a blend of traditional and modern techniques. All metal components were fabricated by human-operated mill, lathe, and plasma cutter. Bent metal rods were shaped using traditional jig and fixture techniques, while the wood components were created using traditional woodworking skills, machinery, and tools. The top is a 10mm tempered glass, and all parts, except the glass, were finished with automobile lacquer-based paint and clear coat.

Organica's dimensions are 90cm x 130cm x 50cm, making it a sizable piece for an entrance hall. The design tags associated with it include 'human body', 'medicine', 'functional art', 'design collectible', 'contemporary furniture', and 'contemporary art'. These tags reflect the design's multifaceted nature, combining functionality, artistry, and a contemporary aesthetic.

Organica is more than just a piece of furniture; it is a philosophical portrayal of any organic system where all parts are interconnected to give existence. The design leads the viewer on a sublime journey, starting with two massive wooden forms that can be perceived as lungs, an aluminum shaft with connectors that resembles a spine, twisted rods that look like arteries, a shape that can be interpreted as an organ, and finally, a beautiful tempered glass that is strong yet fragile, much like human skin.

In 2013, Organica was awarded the Golden A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award, a prestigious recognition granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. These are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
