UnBespoke: A Mathematical Puzzle Turned Design Masterpiece

Jeeyea Kim and Dorian Bybee's Award-Winning Tabletop Object Inspired by the Haberdasher Puzzle

UnBespoke, a unique tabletop object designed by Jeeyea Kim and Dorian Bybee, is a testament to the fusion of mathematical intrigue and artistic creativity. This award-winning design, inspired by the Haberdasher Puzzle, showcases the transformative power of design and the innovative use of natural materials.

The design of UnBespoke stems from a famous mathematical problem, the Haberdasher Puzzle, which explores the dissection of a square into pieces that can be reconstituted into an equilateral triangle. When the pieces are rotated from the square to the equilateral triangle, the undulating interior edges of the initial square are revealed on the perimeter of the triangle. This mathematical inspiration is combined with a design language that utilizes overlapping circles, creating a unique and captivating design.

UnBespoke is not just a design object, but a modular table accessory. Comprising four triangulated stone pieces, it can hold tea light candles or small-scale plants. The design allows for a variety of formations, from square to equilateral triangle, providing users with the freedom to experiment and personalize their space.

The use of Indiana limestone, a natural material known for its beauty and durability, gives UnBespoke a contemporary edge. The design process involved advanced 3D modeling and fabrication by CNC technology, resulting in a decorative design object that renews the legitimacy of limestone in modern design.

The journey of UnBespoke began in April 2019, with the first prototype models fabricated in August 2019. The work was exhibited at the New and Next Exhibition in January 2020 at the Museum of Evansville in Indiana, USA. The design was a result of rigorous research into the use of local materials in contemporary design applications, bringing a whimsical use of limestone into human living environments.

Despite the challenges faced during fabrication due to the small scale of the design, the team successfully overcame these obstacles, resulting in a product that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. UnBespoke was awarded Silver in the A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2020, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.

In conclusion, UnBespoke is a perfect example of how mathematical concepts can inspire beautiful and functional design. It showcases the innovative use of natural materials and the transformative power of design, providing users with a unique, modular table accessory that can be personalized to suit their space.
