The Dancing Cubes installation is a testament to the designer's ability to translate natural phenomena into tangible designs. Shih was inspired by the way ants form a sphere to float above floods, a survival mechanism that he adapted into a module design for display purposes. The result is a fascinating installation that mimics the interconnection mechanism observed in ants.
What sets Dancing Cubes apart is its representation of a miniature society where people meet and dance. The base cube unit is designed in a symmetric free form configuration with three-way holes on each corner to accommodate subjects. A self-expanded connection mechanism was developed to make a cube reach out in three perpendicular directions, creating a structure that resembles interlaced bodies.
The installation was realized using a 3D printer and a mathematical program. The cubes were fastened in a soft manner by an elastic member and four cubes were pinned at four corners. The elastic property enables all units connected with the least amount of accessories and matching colors. No glues or screws were used, showcasing a unique approach to design realization.
The design specifications include a larger unit measuring 6 cm (W) x 6 cm (D) x 6 cm (H) and a smaller unit measuring 3 cm (W) x 3 cm (D) x 3 cm (H). Each module has small round holes connecting eight quadrants, perfect for holding flowers with stems. The connectivity is virtually unlimited, allowing for a variety of configurations and color combinations to match any theme.
The Dancing Cubes project, which originated in Taipei in 2018, took about three months of intensive work. The design process involved extensive research into unit configuration for aesthetic and dynamic appearance, as well as the development of a flexible connection mechanism. The distribution of string had to be well-planned to assure a balance of compression on each corner, a challenge that was successfully overcome.
Shih's Dancing Cubes is a testament to the power of design and innovation. It is not just a theme installation, but a representation of a society where people meet and interact. It is a design that interacts with its displayed subject by modules, creating a dynamic and engaging visual experience. This award-winning installation is a perfect example of how art, architecture, and technology can come together to create something truly unique and inspiring.
