Endless Succession: A Ceramic Gateway to Nature

Art Installation Merges Ecology with Atayal Culture

In the heart of Taiwan, an art installation stands as a testament to the enduring beauty of the natural world and the rich tapestry of local culture. 'Endless Succession' by Jin Ying Yei Tao Pottery Ltd is a ceramic landmark that invites visitors to explore the symbiosis between humanity and the environment.

Commissioned to create a distinctive entrance for the Neidong National Forest Recreation Area, Jin Ying Yei Tao Pottery Ltd envisioned a piece that would encapsulate the splendor of the Xinxian Waterfall and the biodiversity of Neidong. The installation art, shaped like an infinity symbol, not only represents the perpetual cycle of nature but also pays homage to the Atayal people, with totems that narrate their harmonious existence with the land.

The design's permeability and arch-like structure guide guests into the embrace of the forest, while its vibrant green hue, accented with red and black totems, beckons from afar. Upon closer inspection, one discovers intricately carved local species, each crafted by skilled artisans. The lifelike animal and plant motifs are not just for viewing; they invite an interactive experience, breaking the conventional barriers of ceramic art.

Forged in the fires of high-temperature kilns, the ceramics of 'Endless Succession' are hardened beyond 1,200 degrees Celsius, ensuring durability against the elements and human touch. This high-temperature process guarantees the safety and longevity of the colors, allowing the public to engage with the artwork without the risk of heavy metal contamination—a common concern with lower melting point ceramics.

The towering structure, which stands at 450cm tall and spans 250cm wide, was a formidable challenge for Jin Ying Yei Tao Pottery Ltd. The team meticulously layered clay to the desired height, carving out the detailed patterns of butterflies, birds, and tree frogs. After sectioning and kiln-drying, the pieces were assembled to create the final landmark. The precise mixing of glazes was crucial to achieve the desired color effects, highlighting the team's dedication to craftsmanship.

'Endless Succession' is more than just a visual spectacle; it is an interactive piece that shatters preconceived notions of ceramic art. Scratch-resistant, non-toxic, and weatherproof, the installation encourages public engagement. It stands as a symbol of the resilience and beauty of Neidong's ecosystem and the Atayal culture, offering visitors a tangible connection to the artistry of the earth.

Conceived in response to the devastation of Typhoon Soudelor and the subsequent restoration of the Forest Recreation Area, the artwork serves as a beacon of rejuvenation and identity. It captures the essence of the Xinxian Waterfall and the diversity of the park's species, seamlessly integrating Atayal cultural elements. This creative endeavor, which overcame challenges of humidity control and required a deep understanding between the artisans, is a celebration of patience, skill, and environmental harmony.

Recognized for its creative ingenuity and contribution to cultural and ecological awareness, 'Endless Succession' was honored with the Bronze A' Design Award in Fine Arts and Art Installation Design in 2024. This accolade underscores the project's excellence in blending art, science, design, and technology to enhance the quality of life and foster a deeper appreciation for our world.
