Unveiling the Beauty of Communication through Stone

Each stone scene within Conversations represents a different type of communication, whether it be between a couple, a family, two enemies, or even the Buddha and a follower. Shih's inspiration stems from the realization that communication can be both filled with love and tension, and that it plays a vital role in our daily lives.

What sets Conversations apart is the richness of shape and detail in each setting. The collection is designed to be appreciated from various angles, allowing viewers to circle or walk around each scene and discover new perspectives. The absence of glues or stickers, with the exception of one, showcases Shih's extreme patience and dedication to maintaining a delicate balance in each composition.

The Conversations collection boasts a range of sizes, from 38cm x 10cm x 5cm to 15cm x 8cm x 17cm, ensuring there is a display suitable for every space and preference. The use of Gobi stones and Septarian nodule stones adds a unique touch, enhancing the visual appeal and texture of each scene.

Creating Conversations was a labor-intensive process that required extensive research into the materials, shapes, colors, textures, and tones of each stone component. Shih carefully evaluated each stone to determine the best-suited scene or scenario, ensuring that textures were juxtaposed to convey specific stories.

One of the major challenges faced during the creation of Conversations was the initial lack of stone diversity. However, Shih overcame this obstacle by employing contrast sizes to exaggerate the differences between the natural shapes of the stones and the proposed scenarios or gestures. The result is a harmonious balance between the size and scale of each element.

Conversations is intended to be displayed statically, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the beauty of each stone scene. Whether placed on a desk, shelf, or tabletop, these captivating displays serve as a reminder of the multitude of communication styles that exist in the world.

Since its inception in 2016 in Taipei, Taiwan, Conversations has garnered acclaim for its innovative approach to design. Naai-Jung Shih's dedication to capturing the essence of communication through stone has earned the collection the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2018. This recognition highlights the collection's ability to seamlessly integrate industry best practices and technical characteristics, ultimately contributing to a better world.
