SATTVA: A Fusion of Nature and Architecture

Designers Vikram Bhatt and Hansika Jain Create a Multi-Generational Residence Inspired by Nature

The design of SATTVA was largely influenced by the specific geography of the site. Bhatt and Jain extracted relevant elements, motifs, materials, and symbols from the surroundings, which they then reassembled in the design. The result is a space that creates new meanings and experiences for the inhabitants. For instance, the curtain design is inspired by the beauty of the surrounding landscape, and the use of concrete lights replicates birds in flight. The cushions, with their hand-woven pattern of branches and fruits of the banyan tree, add a final touch to the space.

One of the unique features of SATTVA is the creation of spatial memories. These are fleeting yet vivid, a fusion of the real and the imaged, always uncertain, and unique. The parametrically designed stick wall in the home theater, for example, acts as an acoustical surface while adding a touch of glamour to the space. The customised lights, wall arts, and textiles are treated as individual objects that fit into the whole design.

The design solution was to embrace the scale as required, while creating a warm ambiance for the inhabitant. The materials that were mostly favored were timber, concrete, steel, and natural textiles. Earthy tones helped correlate to the surroundings and nature as well as reciprocate to the client's identity.

The project, which started in June 2015 and finished in October 2016, posed several challenges. One of the main challenges was to incorporate elements of nature into the house without being too overt. It was important to maintain the calmness and serene behavior of nature. Another challenge was designing the home theater to be acoustically sound while balancing the subtle character of the design.

The design of SATTVA is a testament to the designers' ability to create spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The residence, which was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018, is a reflection of the designers' prodigy and wisdom. It is a venerated product and a bright idea that advances art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with its desirable characteristics.
