Vicky Chan's Award-Winning Design Fuses Functionality and Aesthetics

The Sorec Horse Park is a testament to the power of design that is both scientific and emotional. Its twisted form, inspired by the movement of horses, is also a response to solar conditions and view optimization. The design utilizes a repetitive trust system, allowing the skin of the building to twist without the need for custom-made items, thus keeping construction costs reasonable. The materials used in the construction are locally sourced, reducing the carbon footprint and allowing the building to blend seamlessly into Rabat's context.

Chan's design is unique in its ability to connect horse, people, and nature. The site is organized in such a way that visitors can enjoy the horse track as a park, with the race happening in the backdrop. The placement of the building and the car park allows for the maximization of the central green space. The circulation separates VIP guests, park visitors, and jockeys, but places of interest like the presentation round and horse walking path connect everything together.

The twisted form of the building is created using a repetitive structure. Skylights and views are cut out from the structure to allow sunlight, view, and air circulation. Solar sensors are deployed to create multiple lighting zones, saving electricity. The interior of the space is organized to allow for both exclusive and inclusive experiences. The canopy is designed to be self-shaded, preventing glare in the grandstand. The skin is perforated at 5 percent to allow sunlight to enter the space in a dramatic way, while reducing heat gain to a minimum.

Chan and his team faced the challenge of separating prestige guests, regular guests, horses, and jockeys while maintaining an atmosphere of unity and excitement. The solution was to create circulation that separates these groups, while ensuring that views of the horses are visible from almost all corners. This design approach ensures that all visitors, from children to prestige guests, can experience the thrill of horse racing.
