Cecilia: A Sustainable Armchair with a Touch of Nostalgia

Linda Martins' Award-Winning Design Combines Sustainability and Scandinavian Style

Introducing Cecilia, an armchair that pays tribute to the past while looking towards the future. Designed by Linda Martins, this piece of furniture combines sustainability, comfort, and Scandinavian design, offering a unique aesthetic and a nod to the designer's grandmother.

Linda Martins, a renowned designer, found inspiration in her grandmother Cecilia's love for handmade works and nature. The armchair is a reflection of these passions, incorporating sustainable solutions and a low design that makes it accessible and comfortable. The backseat, made from leftover fabric, is a testament to Cecilia's love for handcrafted items, while the sustainable construction pays homage to her love for nature.

What sets Cecilia apart from other armchairs is its sustainable design. The structure is made from pressed pieces of wood that would otherwise be discarded, and the seat is made from discarded leather. Even the backseat, made from leftover fabric, is designed to provide comfort while minimizing waste. The result is a unique piece of furniture that is not only comfortable and aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally friendly.

The armchair was realized using a variety of techniques. The structure was created using pressed pieces of wood, while the backseat was made by tying small pieces of fabric to a flexible base with foam inside. The seat, made from discarded leather, can be customized with amendments and details, making each piece unique.

The design process began in November 2019 in Sao Paulo and concluded in January 2020 in Santa Catarina. During this time, Martins conducted extensive research on sustainable and recycled materials that could be used in a functional and aesthetically pleasing way. The challenge was to use leftover fabric for the backseat and leftover wood for the structure, but Martins was able to overcome these obstacles and create a beautiful and sustainable piece of furniture.

Cecilia is more than just an armchair; it's a tribute to a beloved grandmother and a testament to the possibilities of sustainable design. The armchair's low and reclining structure invites users to rest and relax, while its sustainable construction and unique design make it a standout piece in any room. The design was so well-received that it was awarded Silver in the A' Furniture Design Award in 2020, a prestigious accolade that recognizes remarkable designs that showcase outstanding expertise and innovation.
