Moisture: A Unique Humidifier Design

Intuitively Feeling the Humidity

In the past, humidifiers stored water as much as possible. Designer TianQing Li had a different idea - why not show the water vapor so that people can more intuitively feel that the space they are in is actually getting humid?

This innovative humidifier, aptly named Moisture, is designed to provide a more intuitive way of showing subtle changes in humidity in the environment. Created by TianQing Li, this design incorporates two types of water-absorbent materials for its exterior - water-absorbent marble and white cement. When the humidifier is turned on, small water droplets generated by water vapor infiltrate the marble and leave marks on its surface. Additionally, any accidentally spilled water is absorbed by the white cement base. This unique design allows users to visually observe the moisture degree from the surface, providing a tangible connection to the changing environment.

Measuring at 180mm x 180mm x 110mm, Moisture presents a simple yet elegant form that resembles a receptacle. The choice of materials, particularly the contrast between the water-absorbent marble and the white cement, creates a visually striking effect while maintaining a tactile feel and practicality.

Using Moisture is a straightforward process. First, the liner is placed into the cement base. Then, the liner is filled with water. After filling the water, the power switch is pressed, and the marble top is placed on the base. As the humidifier operates, steam curls out, gradually wetting the marble dome and moistening the entire surface.

The design project for Moisture started in Guangzhou in November 2019 and was completed in January 2020. Originally intended to be exhibited at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in March 2020, this unique humidifier showcases the designer's meticulous research and experimentation with materials and forms.

Moisture has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2020. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. Moisture's unique approach to showcasing humidity and its contribution to improving the quality of life make it a deserving recipient of this accolade.

With Moisture, TianQing Li has reimagined the traditional humidifier, transforming it into a visually and tactilely engaging object that allows users to connect with the changing environment. By incorporating water-absorbent materials and providing a tangible representation of humidity, Moisture offers a unique and intuitive way to experience the subtle changes in our surroundings.
