Kawarie Zabuton: A Japanese Cushion Inspired by Origami

Unique Floor Cushion Design by Misako Niwa

Kawarie Zabuton, designed by Misako Niwa, takes inspiration from the origami picture-changing box and combines it with traditional Japanese patterns to create a versatile and stylish floor cushion. With its warm texture and unique design, this Japanese cushion is perfect for modern living spaces.

The Kawarie Zabuton stands out from other floor cushions with its use of Kurume cloth, a traditional Japanese craft. The combination of texture and taste brings warmth to any space, making it a perfect addition to contemporary interiors. The cushion showcases the transition of beautiful seasons in Japan, offering a carefree and comfortable lifestyle.

The design of the Kawarie Zabuton is based on a hexagonal shape that folds inwards from the center. When folded, three different patterns appear, allowing users to change the look of the cushion effortlessly. This mechanism is reminiscent of turning the pages of a picture book, adding an element of surprise and delight to the design.

The fabric used in the Kawarie Zabuton is Kurume Kasuri, a type of ikat fabric woven in the Chikugo area of Fukuoka, Japan. This traditional craft, dating back to the 1800s, involves weaving dyed Kasuri ikat yarn to create intricate patterns. The result is a fabric that is both visually appealing and durable. The cushion also features a core material made of urethane foam, which provides superior comfort and support.

With a diameter of 400mm and a thickness of 60mm, the Kawarie Zabuton is designed to offer optimal seating comfort. Its elastic properties ensure that even after prolonged use, the cushion retains its shape and resilience.

The Kawarie Zabuton was initially developed as a graduation project and later launched as an individual business in July 2015. The first prototype was manufactured in November of the same year, marking the beginning of this unique design's journey.

Recognized for its innovative and practical design, the Kawarie Zabuton received the Iron A' Furniture Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to creations that meet professional and industrial requirements while integrating industry best practices and technical characteristics.

Experience the warmth and elegance of Japanese design with the Kawarie Zabuton. Its unique folding mechanism, traditional craftsmanship, and comfortable materials make it a perfect addition to any modern living space.
