From a distance, it appears as a chaotic mess of lines, but upon closer inspection, it reveals itself as a meticulously designed shelf. This innovative approach to design not only provides a functional storage solution but also adds an artistic touch to any space.
The realization of the Sketch Shelf required a blend of digital design methods and traditional manufacturing processes. The designers used the Grasshopper software to generate random shapes, which were then adjusted according to ergonomics and aesthetics. The final design, suitable for industrial mass production, was achieved by breaking the whole into pieces of metal and connecting them.
The Sketch Shelf is not just about aesthetics; it's about functionality too. With dimensions of 812 mm * 424 mm * 1630 mm, it can hold and hang various items, making it an ideal piece for both office and commercial spaces. The top support leg can even be used to hang clothes, adding to its versatility.
The design process, which started in November 2019 and concluded in August 2020 in Hangzhou, was not without its challenges. The designers had to balance the relationship between the random forms generated by the computer and the product forms. They also had to ensure that these random forms were compatible with industrial mass production. Despite these challenges, the team managed to create a product that challenges the public's understanding of traditional shelves.
The Sketch Shelf is a testament to the power of digital design. It embodies a dynamic design style that pursues uncertainties and creates a vast amount of variate by logical algorithm. This approach to design not only provides a new sense of openness but also sparks the imagination, potentially changing our way of thinking.
The Sketch Shelf's innovative design and functionality have not gone unnoticed. It was awarded Silver in A' Furniture Design Award in 2023, a prestigious accolade given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and creativity of the design team at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University.
