Carlsbad: The Mobile Police TabletPC

A Sleek and Functional Solution for Police and Emergency Services

The Carlsbad tablet PC is a unique and innovative design that combines the functionality of 5 to 7 tablet PCs into one streamlined device. Designed by Travis Baldwin, this mobile police tablet PC is specifically tailored to meet the needs of law enforcement and emergency services.

The inspiration behind the Carlsbad tablet PC came from the need to provide rich mobile data access over the Tetra police radio network in the UK and Europe. Unlike traditional text or audio transmission, the Carlsbad allows users to access and interact with a wide range of data while on the move. The design team, led by Travis Baldwin, aimed to create a device that was not only functional but also comfortable to hold and use during patrols.

One of the standout features of the Carlsbad tablet PC is its ergonomic design. The device is shaped to fit comfortably in the hand, with an integrated rubber bumper that adds a layer of protection without compromising its sleek and high-end appearance. The form factor was carefully sculpted and refined through clay models and SolidWorks simulations to ensure optimal grip and usability.

Measuring 185mm x 310mm x 60mm, the Carlsbad tablet PC is compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry and use while on foot. The device features a 10.1-inch screen and runs on the Windows 7 operating system. It is equipped with a Tetra modem and antenna based on the Cassidian TETRA LTE radio system, allowing seamless integration with the police radio network.

Travis Baldwin and his team faced several challenges during the design process. They had to strike a balance between creating a professional, high-tech appearance and ensuring the device was fit for purpose in a police or emergency setting. The result is a device that combines functionality with a sleek and friendly design, conveying both capability and approachability.

The Carlsbad tablet PC went through extensive research and development, with several prototypes tested in the field to refine its design and functionality. The final product incorporates certified modules for internal components, streamlining the manufacturing process and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Since its launch in 2011, the Carlsbad tablet PC has received accolades for its innovative design. In 2020, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Security, Safety, and Surveillance Products Design category. This recognition highlights the device's outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and contribution to improving the quality of life for police and emergency service personnel.

The Carlsbad tablet PC is a testament to the power of design and innovation in meeting specific needs. With its unique features and functionality, it is revolutionizing the way police and emergency services access and utilize mobile data in the field.
