Deqing, known for its centuries-old silk weaving industry, is undergoing a phase of urban renewal. As part of this transformation, Lin embarked on a comprehensive study of the region's textile history and geographical features. The result is a modern urban art center that respects its historical roots while embracing contemporary design techniques.
The "Textile" project is unique in its approach to urban renewal. Lin has retained the original cultural style of the old factory building while incorporating modern design elements. The space follows the architectural structure of the old factory, using broken lines as architectural symbols to form an organic unity. The result is an art center that feels like a gallery existing within a box.
The design realization technology employed in this project is noteworthy. LED lights, representing yarn, are used to create a visually malleable space. The light strips above the reception desk follow the roof, simulating a giant textile machine. This innovative design element allows the space to cross through history, helping visitors to regain the memory of the region's textile past.
The art center is divided into two main areas: a historical exhibition hall and a community art center. The former is used to display and promote the history and cultural development of the Leidian textile industry, while the latter serves as a youth art activity center and library, integrating learning, reading, and communication.
The project, which started in February 2019 and was completed in December of the same year, faced the challenge of preserving the historic building. Lin managed to respect the original culture and residual status of the space, retain historical elements, and equip it with modern diversified functional spaces, thereby injecting new vitality into the space.
The "Textile" project has been recognized for its innovative approach to design and respect for history. It was awarded Silver in the A' Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design Award in 2020, a prestigious accolade that rewards top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs.
