Burwood Brickworks: A Celebration of Wurundjeri Culture

An Art Installation by Balarinji

Balarinji's design concept for Burwood Brickworks draws inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of the Wurundjeri, Dja Dja wurrung, and Ngurai illum wurrung communities. The art installation reflects the six elements of Wurundjeri culture and celebrates the local environment and landmarks.

Balarinji, in collaboration with local artist Mandy Nicholson, was commissioned by Frasers Property Australia to design public art installations for Burwood Brickworks, the world's most sustainable shopping center. The project aimed to create a space deeply embedded in the local culture and to give voice to a segment of society rarely heard from in a positive and inclusive way.

The art installation consists of a ceiling mural and outer facade murals. The black and white linework, inspired by Wurundjeri art, incorporates references to local geographical landmarks. The ceiling mural, printed on vinyl, showcases the interconnected spiritual elements of Wurundjeri culture, including Forest Country, Sky Country, Wind Country, Water Country, On Country, and Below Country.

Mandy Nicholson, together with Balarinji, developed the artwork concept after a site visit where she learned about the story of the site and its significance within Country. The outer facade murals were meticulously hand-painted by the artist, ensuring a unique and authentic representation of the Wurundjeri culture.

The project faced the challenge of meeting the criteria of the Living Building Challenge, which required the building to contribute to the local community's sense of place and celebrate local culture, spirit, and history. Balarinji's design concept successfully achieved this by embedding Aboriginal culture and celebrating local stories, people, environment, and history.

The Burwood Brickworks art installation stands as a testament to the power of art and design in creating spaces that honor and celebrate indigenous cultures. It serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusivity and the need to give voice to diverse communities in our built environment.

This remarkable design has been recognized for its excellence and innovation. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design category in 2022. This prestigious award acknowledges the design's practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial requirements.
