Mortise-tenon Joint Stationery

Combining Tradition and Modernity

Mortise-tenon joint stationery is a unique design concept that combines traditional Chinese craftsmanship with modern functionality. Designed by Youzhi Ruan, Yuqiang Zhang, and Sha Yang, this collection of adjustable lamps, storage boxes, and ink-stones showcases the beauty and versatility of the mortise-tenon joint.

The inspiration for this design comes from the ancient art of mortise and tenon, a traditional Chinese handicraft that dates back five thousand years. While the use of mortise and tenon has diminished in modern times, the designers sought to revive and promote this unique craftsmanship by incorporating it into contemporary products.

The lamp in this collection features a controllable light intensity, achieved by combining the most commonly used tenon shape with a rotating light bar. The result is a lamp that not only provides stability but also exudes modern artistic aesthetics. By simply rotating the shaft at the end of the light bar, users can adjust the intensity of the light to suit their needs.

The storage box, inspired by the game of Go, utilizes the straight tenon in its construction. Divided into three parts, the top section consists of 25 hollow square bars that can store black and white chess pieces. The gaps between the square bars can also be used to hold cards or name cards. The middle section of the box is designed to hold small objects such as pins, while the bottom section is ideal for storing notes or memos. This multi-functional storage box not only provides practical storage solutions but also serves as a source of entertainment during breaks from work.

The ink-stone in this collection takes its shape from the pin plate and tenon-horse, two iconic elements of traditional Chinese furniture. With pen slots and a paperweight on each side, this ink-stone offers a convenient and elegant solution for storing brushes and ink. The curved design of the ink-stone provides a comfortable and efficient workspace for calligraphy and painting enthusiasts.

Handmade using CNC carving techniques, the mortise-tenon joint stationery collection is crafted from cherry, beech, and black walnut wood. The specifications for each piece are as follows: the square box measures 155mm x 155mm x 190mm, the lamp's body is 40mm x 400mm, the lamp's leg is 40mm x 40mm x 180mm, and the ink-stone measures 370mm x 300mm x 45mm.

This innovative design has been recognized for its excellence and creativity. In 2018, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial standards.
