Interactive Projection Redefines Cultural Relics Exhibition

Traditional cultural relics exhibitions often lack interaction between the objects and the audience. However, Linfeng Zhang's design, known as the Experience Design of Chime, breaks this barrier by integrating interactive projection technology with chimes. Inspired by the desire to strike the chimes and listen to their sound in museums, Zhang saw an opportunity to combine interactive projection with this traditional Chinese musical instrument.

The Experience Design of Chime offers a unique and engaging way to exhibit cultural relics. By striking the chimes, audiences not only experience the joy of making music but also delve into cultural knowledge. Unlike conventional exhibitions, this design encourages independent exploration, breathing new life into classical culture.

The hardware of the design includes projectors, radars, computers, and speakers. The projection size is 90cm×258cm, creating an immersive and visually captivating experience for the audience.

In the interactive system, all flashing images can be clicked, including the aperture on the chime, the menu bar, and various small images on each interface. The aperture on the chime guides the audience to play a melody, while the menu bar allows users to navigate through different interfaces. For example, in the history interface, clicking on flashing flags and characters reveals additional information.

The Experience Design of Chime was launched at Hefei University of Technology in Anhui, China in February 2021 and completed in June of the same year. The exhibition opened in mid-June, captivating visitors with its innovative approach to cultural relics.

Designing this interactive experience presented two main challenges for Linfeng Zhang. Firstly, creating graphic content that would be appealing and accessible to the public. Secondly, realizing the technology and hardware required to build the entire interactive system. Overcoming these challenges, Zhang successfully created an immersive and educational experience for museum-goers.

The Experience Design of Chime has received recognition for its excellence. In 2022, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design category. This prestigious award acknowledges the design's practicality, innovation, and ability to meet professional and industrial requirements, contributing to a better world.
