Loong Palace 480: A Modern Villa with a Cultural Twist

David Chang Design Associates Intl. Merges Modern Design with Cultural Artistry

The Loong Palace 480, a residential project by David Chang Design Associates Intl., is a unique blend of modern design and cultural artistry. Inspired by the curling shape of rolled up book pages, this project represents the knowledge from books that can create a wonderful life financially, emotionally, and spiritually.

Located in the north of Haidian district, Beijing, the project is nestled among famous universities and high-tech industry bases. This dynamic land represents China's emerging technology and cultural power, and is situated in a beautiful environment, known for producing royal rice specially supplied to the west of Beijing since ancient times. The project boasts the advantages of gathering land and resources, and holds the scarcity value of high-end villas.

The family library uses luminescent jade on the floor and frosted glass on the fence to showcase the soft and beautiful texture of jade, while golden metal bookshelves and metal mesh create an effect of a house of gold. The ceiling adopts the curling shape of the book page being rolled up. An influx of natural light enters from the skylight, and sprinkles on the opening huge golden book page. The abstract shape of a tree is used in the middle, offering vivid layering and sense of distance, partially permeating the golden brilliance of the sun through the spaces between the trees and branches in the deep forest.

The villa is predominantly modern, but it has also integrated a sense of culture and art to neutralize the intrinsic austere sensation of the modern style. The space is made up of straight lines, arc lines, and the curling shape derived from the form of rolled up book pages that are prevalent throughout the main spaces. The design of the underground space went through several iterations, from the original recreational and sports space to the current design of an airy family library in the main space of the underground floor.

The project was completed in May 2020, after commencing in February 2019. The design team included Design Director David Chang, and designers Jim Du, Pingping Jiang, Simon Zhang, Becky Sun, Xiaomin Li, Yongning Yu, Meixian Tian, Jolin Fan, and Berry Ling. The villa features a total of 5 bedrooms with 4 major areas throughout the floors to maximize the need for private as well as for public interaction.

The Loong Palace 480 was awarded Silver in the A' Luxury Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
