Bamboo Windows: A Modern Mansion with Literary Elegance

A Unique Design Inspired by Chinese Gardens

The designers of Bamboo Windows drew inspiration from the principles outlined in "Yuanye," the first monograph in China to comprehensively explain the art of garden-building. By translating the scenes from the book into modern space, they have successfully captured the essence of Chinese gardens. The focal point of this design is bamboo, a symbol of strength and resilience in Chinese culture. Bamboo can bend but not break, and even if it fracks, it won't shatter. This characteristic represents the literati style with strength in gentleness, which is beautifully incorporated into the design.

Bamboo Windows stands out from other designs due to its unique combination of traditional Chinese court etiquette and lyrical scenery. The designers have meticulously created a modern mansion that exudes literary elegance and oriental courtyard order. The project encompasses various functional spaces, including the reception area, display area, conversation area, reading area, and children's area. Each space is thoughtfully designed to provide a modern, humane, and cultural environment with an oriental spirit and atmosphere.

The realization of Bamboo Windows involves a careful interplay of light and shadow. The grid-like structure allows light to penetrate and interweave, creating a dappled effect reminiscent of sunlight filtering through a bamboo forest. The reception hall features marble, which enhances the calm temperament of the space and adds depth to the design. The warmth of wood and the coolness of marble materials are balanced, creating a harmonious blend of nature and humanity.

Spanning across 1200 square meters, Bamboo Windows is a testament to the designer's meticulous attention to detail. The design team, led by Kris Lin and Jiayu Yang, has successfully created a space that captures the essence of Chinese gardens while incorporating modern elements.

The reading area within Bamboo Windows is designed in a semi-open style, providing a peaceful and comfortable atmosphere for reading. Surrounded by a bookcase on three sides, this space immerses readers in a serene environment. Traditional Chinese furniture adds an oriental touch, while the VIP room ensures privacy and adds versatility to the space. The elegant furniture, adorned with gray-blue soft decoration fabric, creates a modern and diversified space with a timeless and elegant oriental feel.

The Bamboo Windows project commenced in March 2019 in Xiamen, China, and was completed in November 2019. It was exhibited in Xiamen in November 2009, showcasing the design's exceptional qualities. The designers conducted extensive research on Chinese gardens, drawing inspiration from the artistic conception and principles outlined in "Yuanye." This research formed the foundation for the design, reflecting the highest state of human-nature relations.

Bamboo Windows presented several challenges during its creation. Chinese gardens emphasize the use of wooden grids and the progressive court etiquette of layers. The designers skillfully arranged the density of the grids, creating a sense of abundant sensory feelings in the dimension of time and space. Each functional space within Bamboo Windows is treated as a courtyard, connected by bridges that seamlessly transition between different areas.

Bamboo Windows is a testament to the designer's ability to blend traditional Chinese elements with modern design principles. By incorporating the principles of gardening from "Yuanye," this design showcases the beauty and elegance of Chinese gardens in a contemporary setting. Bamboo Windows was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Hospitality, Recreation, Travel, and Tourism Design category in 2020. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
