Ketan Jawdekar, a renowned designer, found inspiration for the Kopp restaurant and bar project in the local Goan language. "Kopp" means a glass of a drink, and the whirlpool formed by stirring a drink in a glass became the focal point of the design. With a limited budget, Jawdekar had to think out of the box, leading to the innovative use of recycled PVC drainage pipes and Y bends to create a unique and engaging interior decor.
The uniqueness of Kopp lies in its unconventional use of materials. The design philosophy of repetition of a module generating patterns is evident in the use of drainage pipes for the interior decor. This innovative approach not only kept patrons engaged but also ensured the interiors stayed fresh and appealing, aligning with future design trends.
To realize this design, Jawdekar implemented the Fibonacci curve derived from the use of a module. The central column served as the base, with the ceiling wrapped around it using PVC drainage pipes and Y bends. The curve in both horizontal and vertical planes was enhanced using curved panels of plywood cladded with veneer. The concept of white was followed to enhance the play of light and shadow.
The restaurant, located on the ground level of a commercial complex, has an indoor space of 250 square meters and an outdoor area of 100 square meters. The outdoor area, visible from indoors, features bright colored decor, creating a vibrant palate on a stark white canvas of interiors. The design project started in September 2017 in Pune, India, and was completed in November 2017.
Despite the challenges of a low budget and time constraints, Jawdekar successfully explored various materials and concluded on using recycled PVC drainage pipes. The connections of pipes made it easy to repeat the modules, but the challenge was the stability of these connected modules. This was addressed by introducing vertical curved panels in plywood, which not only enhanced the structural stability but also enhanced the entire form of the whirlpool.
Ketan Jawdekar's innovative design approach for Kopp earned him the Silver A' Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. Kopp, with its unconventional use of materials and unique design philosophy, truly embodies these qualities.
