Paul Liu and Hank Xia's Award-Winning Design Balances Contemporary Style with Local Culture

The Xiamen Marriott Hotel, located just steps from the seaside, covers an area of more than 60,000 square meters. It features 366 contemporary rooms and suites, a three-meal restaurant, a Chinese restaurant, a specialty restaurant, 8 meeting rooms, 2 ballrooms, a fitness center, a pool & spa, and a sweet shop. The hotel's design is a testament to the designers' ability to balance site, environment, and program requirements, resulting in a harmonious vision that matches the architectural structure shape.

One of the unique aspects of the hotel's design is the efficient and economical floor plan configurations. These configurations are designed to maximize the percentage of floor area devoted to guest rooms and minimize the amount of circulation and service space. This approach reduces walking distances for both guests and housekeeping and management staff, enhancing the overall guest experience.

Another challenge the designers faced was selecting the appropriate construction materials, considering the hotel's proximity to the seaside. They also had to locate public and service elevators strategically and configure guest rooms to provide guests with a greater connection to the site. Despite these challenges, Liu and Xia succeeded in creating a design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The designers' efforts were recognized when the Xiamen Marriott Hotel was awarded the Golden A' Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design Award in 2019.
