Harbor Project 01: Redefining Boutique Lodging with Ship Building Theory

A Unique Concept in Short Stay Lodging

Situated in the heart of Piraeus, the Harbor Project 01 is a boutique apartment hotel that introduces a groundbreaking concept in short stay lodging. Designed by renowned architect Helen Brasinika, this innovative project combines the principles of ship building with the comfort and luxury of a modern hotel.

The inspiration for the Harbor Project 01 stems from the close historical connection between Piraeus port and ship building. By applying ship building theory to the design concept, Brasinika has created a space that not only reflects the maritime heritage of the area but also maximizes comfort, privacy, and ergonomics.

The Harbor Project 01 comprises five apartment suites, each with an average size of 32 square meters. What sets this design apart is the built-in wooden structure that flows like a polyline, seamlessly integrating all the functions and utilities of the space. This unique feature not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the apartments but also provides a practical and efficient layout.

The dominant material used in the design is oriented strand board (OSB) panels, which are commonly associated with commercial cargo shipping and transportation. These panels have been treated with a special stucco plaster, resins, and wax to create a smooth velvet texture reminiscent of marble. This treatment not only enhances the durability of the material but also adds a touch of luxury to the overall design.

Each apartment in the Harbor Project 01 has its own bespoke wallpaper theme, adding a personalized touch to the space. The use of bronze antique metallic finishes, Edison bulbs for lighting, and custom-made patterns for fabrics with ship building sketches further enhance the industrial aesthetic of the design. The color palette, inspired by harbor ropes and materials found in docks, is soft and low contrast, creating a soothing and inviting atmosphere.

The wooden structure that dominates the floorplan of each apartment was cut using CNC machines, painted, and assembled in the factory to ensure perfect installation. Special key mechanisms were used to interlock the columns vertically, providing stability and structural integrity.

Guests of the Harbor Project 01 can also enjoy the exclusive harbor courtyard, which features a garden, a tiled square for yoga and Pilates, and benches for socializing and relaxation. The unique pattern on the tiles is repeated on the artwork of the garden benches, bed covers, and bathroom ware, further reinforcing the identity and character of the hotel.

Completed in February 2015, the Harbor Project 01 is a testament to the creativity, innovation, and attention to detail of Helen Brasinika and her design team. This unique concept in boutique lodging has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in Hospitality, Recreation, Travel, and Tourism Design.
