Hungarosauna: A Floating Spa Oasis

Architect Gyula Takacs' Innovative Lakeside Retreat

Architect Gyula Takacs has created a unique floating spa, Hungarosauna, that seamlessly blends architecture and landscape design. This award-winning project, located in Hajduszoboszlo, Hungary, offers a year-round retreat that harmonizes with its natural surroundings.

The inspiration for Hungarosauna came from a desire to incorporate a less frequented stretch of coastline into the tourist circulation. Takacs envisioned a lakeside promenade, complete with piers and aquatic planters, that would attract visitors throughout the year. The centerpiece of this vision is a sauna building that stands as the physical closure of the linear grove, cassette, pruning, and bar.

The sauna building, accessible from both the spa area and the park, is unique in its design and function. It serves as a boundary between the beach area and the open lakeside section, with the main sauna function situated above the water. This innovative design allows guests to enjoy the spa experience throughout the year, regardless of the season.

The building's construction utilizes a wooden pillar-frame structure with cross-laminated lintel, giving it the appearance of a tree trunk. This design choice, coupled with the use of renewable energy sources like solar panels and environmentally conscious materials, minimizes the ecological footprint of the building. The result is a structure that is as sustainable as it is aesthetically pleasing.

The technical specifications of the project are impressive. With a land area of 2600 m2 and a total net building area of 350 m2, the design manages to maintain a low installation percentage to design area of 13.5%. The facade height of 5.9 m, along with the extensive use of wood and green surfaces, further enhances the natural feel of the building.

The design process was not without its challenges. Takacs had to consider factors such as scheduling, sustainability, and expandability, as well as adapt to unexpected economic situations. Despite these challenges, the project was successfully completed between 2019 and 2020, earning it the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020.

The Hungarosauna is a testament to Gyula Takacs' innovative architectural design and commitment to sustainability. It stands as a beacon of tranquility and relaxation, offering a unique spa experience that is truly one with nature.
