Free and Easy: Redefining Easel Design

A Revolutionary Solution for Artists and Art Enthusiasts

At present, similar easels waste a lot of space for gathering and storage, inconvenient transportation and cost increase, especially for schools and arts studios. Also, during using time, the existing triangle easels block space, which really affects the sight artists and tutorship of teachers. Free and Easy is a solution for these problems and can also be used in outdoor sketching. It is incredibly easy for users to carry and offers a reasonable space for color palettes and painting tools.

Free and Easy, designed by the Industrial Design College in LAFA, is a new type of easel that presents more possibilities to meet the needs of consumers in various use scenarios. Whether it's a small studio for SOHO professionals, outdoor sketching, or classroom applications in art classes, this easel design is versatile and convenient. It is easy to pull and carry, fitting perfectly in a car trunk, and remains stable during use. Its convenience in assembly and transportation, along with its flat and neat shape for storage, saves space and greatly reduces transportation costs.

The frame of the easel is made of two materials: wood and nylon engineering plastic. Metal fasteners and magnets serve as accessories, ensuring durability and functionality. With dimensions of 560mm in width, 100mm in depth, and 1300mm in height, Free and Easy strikes the perfect balance between portability and stability.

During use, adjusting the left and right plastic wheels controls the bracket's height, allowing users to raise the drawing board to their desired level. The design combines the picture box cover plate and color palette, saving space and making it easier for users to access their painting materials. The support bar of the easel features a u-shaped metal clip that limits the angle and keeps the painting in place.

The Free and Easy project started in January 2019 at the LAFA Communal Facility Design Studio and was completed in January 2020 at the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Industrial Design in LAFA. Extensive research and analysis of the market for painting supplies led the designers to identify the need for a revolutionary easel design. By focusing on productization and addressing the existing problems with easel products, the Industrial Design College in LAFA created a solution that enhances the user experience and meets the demands of different use scenarios.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was achieving a lightweight design without compromising functionality. Through comprehensive analysis and research on the structure, function, material, and user interaction, the designers successfully created an easel that is ergonomic, practical, and aesthetically pleasing. The final design is a result of numerous sketches and discussions, ensuring that it meets the desired effect.

Free and Easy has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Art and Stationery Supplies Design category in 2020. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Free and Easy stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

With its unique features and thoughtful design, Free and Easy is set to revolutionize the way artists and art enthusiasts approach their creative process. Its portability, usability, and lightness make it a must-have tool for artists of all levels. Whether it's in a small studio, outdoors, or in a classroom, Free and Easy offers a convenient and efficient solution for all painting needs.
