The Multiverse: A Journey into the Artisan Watchmaker's Mind

Revolutionizing Exhibition Design with Hong Kong Trade Development Council's Award-Winning Concept

Discover the innovative design approach of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council as they transform the introductory passageway of the Hong Kong Watch and Clock Fair into an immersive journey into the subconscious of an artisan watchmaker.

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council has taken exhibition design to new heights with their revolutionary concept, "The Multiverse". This unique design approach was implemented in the introductory passageway of the Hong Kong Watch and Clock Fair, a prestigious event showcasing international watch brands. The Council's design was inspired by the client's desire to evoke a sense of discovery in visitors, leading to the creation of an abstract concept reflecting the intangible aspects of an artisan watchmaker's creative process.

"The Multiverse" is a series of audio and visual installations designed to depict the emotional journey of an artisan watchmaker. Each spatial experience is intended to evoke a specific emotional response, setting the stage for visitors as they explore the various branded watch booths. The design's unique properties lie in its ability to reflect an artisan watchmaker's subconsciousness during moments of creative focus, creating an immersive experience unlike any other.

The design was realized using lightweight reusable aluminium systems for the walled structures, covered with stretched vinyl graphics. Special interactive audio and visual equipment, including LED screens, furniture, and props, were hired for the project. The design also incorporated biodegradable carpets, a bespoke mechanical device for a sand machine, acoustic panels, and metallic spherical balloon sculptures.

The technical specifications of the design included reusable aluminum frames cladded with vinyl graphics and mirrored panels on plywood backing. The introductory passage featured various openings with themed installations, a high LED waterfall with a long mirrored overhang, and two wide LED screens. A stage was also featured in the main carpeted space.

The design was a result of extensive research aimed at evoking feelings of new discovery in visitors. The design team explored the subconscious journey of an artisan watchmaker, building a series of abstract spatial installations using visuals and sounds to reflect the serenity, inspiration, and inner focus needed to create a master timepiece. The project was a testament to the team's ability to overcome creative, technical, and research challenges, resulting in a design that stimulated the imagination of visitors and provided a unique experience.

The success of "The Multiverse" design was recognized with a Silver A' Event and Happening Design Award in 2021, a prestigious accolade awarded to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. This recognition is a testament to the Hong Kong Trade Development Council's commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and creating unique, immersive experiences for visitors.
