Connect Circulate: A Modern Minimalist Residential Design

Transforming Spaces for Connection and Hospitality

The unique feature of Connect Circulate lies in its use of high room-scale and clean lines to create cantilever stairs, effectively connecting the upper and lower floors while achieving the spaciousness desired by the clients. This installation-like staircase breaks away from conventional design concepts, providing a new perspective on vertical connection. The smooth circulation lines not only enhance the visual appeal but also encourage interaction among the users.

The realization of Connect Circulate involves the use of materials such as wood veneer, tiles, stove finish, metals, and wood flooring. The two-story building spans approximately 595 square meters, with the first floor housing the entrance, living room, dining room, kitchen, four bedrooms, and two bathrooms. The second floor is dedicated to three sets of master bedrooms with bathrooms and a secondary room.

The design of the staircase in Connect Circulate underwent significant changes to enhance the connection between the lower and upper floors. By repositioning the stairs adjacent to the wall, the corridor on the second floor became more complete, fostering a closer connection between the two levels. The new staircase structure offers a light and penetrating visual sense, redefining the concept of stairs and promoting user interaction.

Connect Circulate was completed in June 2019 in Taichung City, Taiwan. The design concept revolves around creating an open space that incorporates pure line proportions and simple materials. By integrating elements such as patios, stairs, and corridors on the second floor, the design achieves a multifunctional living environment. The strategic use of openings and the surrounding landscape maximizes natural light and connects users with the outdoor greenery.

The design of Connect Circulate presented several challenges, including guiding movement lines in the open living area, managing transparency while resolving the sense of weight and volume, and ensuring the safety of vertical circulation. The transition to a cantilever structure required careful consideration of factors such as pedal and handrail design to achieve a harmonious relationship with each area.

Connect Circulate exemplifies a modern minimalist residential design that combines simplicity, functionality, and visual appeal. By integrating various living spaces into a cohesive layout, the design fosters connection and interaction among residents. Sung Hsing Lee's innovative approach to space design has earned Connect Circulate the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021.
