Filtration of Tea Crumbs: Redesigning Tea Cans for a Flawless Brewing Experience

Revolutionizing Tea Can Design

When we drink tea, the tiny bits of tea leaves floating in the cup can affect the drinking experience because we don't drink the leaves with the tea, especially since small dregs float easily around our mouths, so we want to strain out the tiny dregs before we pour the tea so that the brewed tea is all complete and pretty.

Tea lovers rejoice! Zhang Jia, Chen Yang, and Yikai Sijie have introduced a game-changing innovation in tea can design that promises to elevate your tea drinking experience. The team recognized that the presence of fine tea crumbs floating in the cup can disrupt the enjoyment of a perfectly brewed cup of tea. To address this issue, they have ingeniously redesigned tea cans with a built-in filtration system, ensuring that only the pure essence of the tea reaches your lips.

The key to this innovative design lies in the placement of a hemispherical sieve at the bottom of the tea cans, creating a separate compartment. By shaking the tea can during the pouring process, the finely chopped tea crumbs are concentrated into the bottom compartment, away from the brewed tea. This ensures that the tea leaves poured from the pot remain intact, allowing for an undisturbed and visually appealing tea tasting experience.

Made from high-quality tinplate material, the tea cans undergo a meticulous production process that includes material selection, printing layout, cutting, stamping, and packaging. The final product measures 90mmx90mmx180mm, providing ample space to hold your favorite tea leaves.

One of the remarkable aspects of this design is its adaptability to different types of tea. The filter hole patterns are customized to suit the size of the tea crumbs specific to each tea variety, ensuring optimal filtration without compromising aesthetics.

Operating the tea can is a breeze. Simply shake the can before pouring out the tea leaves to concentrate the crumbs in the bottom compartment. The bottom hemispherical sieve prevents the finely chopped tea crumbs from returning to the top layer when pouring the tea leaves. To access the brewed tea, rotate the bottom compartment to open it, and pull up the top cover to reveal the tea leaves. This intuitive interaction enhances the overall user experience.

The Filtration of Tea Crumbs project commenced in November 2019 in Guangzhou and was completed in January 2020. Throughout the design process, the team conducted extensive research, delving into the relationship between the user and the product. By incorporating unconscious design principles and theoretical studies, they were able to create a product that seamlessly integrates functionality and user satisfaction.

The design team faced several challenges during the development of this innovative tea can. The most significant hurdle was ensuring that only the finely chopped tea leaves passed through the filter, while preventing the entire tea from being filtered out. Additionally, they had to strike a balance between functionality and aesthetics, creating filter pores that were both effective and visually pleasing.

This groundbreaking tea can design has not gone unnoticed. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2021. This prestigious accolade recognizes designs that demonstrate exceptional creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. The Filtration of Tea Crumbs design stands as a testament to the team's technical prowess and their dedication to enhancing the tea drinking experience for tea enthusiasts worldwide.
