WTHN: A Side Table Collection That Transforms Your Space

Pushing the Limits of Material and Design

Inspired by the Light & Space movement in California, designer David Hwang introduces WTHN, a side table collection that combines simplicity with a vibrant play of colors. Each piece is made of the same material but showcases different hues and saturation, creating a captivating visual experience.

WTHN is not your ordinary side table. It is a testament to the power of design and the impact of the environment on a piece. The faceted design, in conjunction with the material, allows for a strong single color to be showcased on each side. As a result, the table illuminates your space with a variety of colors, transforming the ambiance throughout the day.

What sets WTHN apart is its innovative use of materials. The table is crafted from acrylic with dichroic finishes, a combination that creates a mesmerizing effect. Dichroic finishes are known for their ability to display different colors depending on the angle of light, making each side of the table shine with a unique hue. This creates a sense of magic and intrigue, as the colors shift and change as you move around the table.

Another remarkable feature of WTHN is its configurability. Each piece can be combined with others to create a limitless configuration, allowing you to arrange them in a way that suits your personal style and space. Whether you prefer a symmetrical arrangement or an asymmetrical composition, WTHN offers endless possibilities for customization.

The journey to create WTHN was not without its challenges. While dichroic finishes have been used by many designers, David Hwang wanted to find a unique way to push the limits of what a single material can achieve. Through endless experimentation and exploration, he discovered the perfect design that allows each side of the table to produce a different color, as if they were all different colored films.

The WTHN side table collection was born out of David Hwang's fascination with the Light & Space movement and his desire to bring the concept of "ambiguity" into everyday objects. By incorporating dichroic finishes into a functional piece of furniture, he has created a design that sparks curiosity and invites contemplation.

WTHN was developed in Los Angeles, with the project starting in February 2020 and concluding in June 2020. The result is a stunning collection of side tables that not only serve a practical purpose but also elevate the aesthetics of any space they inhabit.

Recognized for its innovative design, WTHN was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2021. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. WTHN stands as a testament to the power of design to improve our quality of life and make the world a better place.
