Toowong Renovation: A Future-Proofed Residential Home

Designing a Home Tailored to Lifestyle

The Toowong Renovation, designed by Dion Seminara, is a residential home that showcases the perfect blend of functionality and aesthetics. Inspired by the clients' desire for a personalized and future-proofed living space, this project stands out with its unique features and innovative design elements.

The main objective of the Toowong Renovation was to make the most of the sloping block on which the house was situated. This presented new design ideas and opportunities that would not have been possible on a flat property. The use of curved, rounded, and natural forms created a seamless flow from the home into the landscape, reducing challenges such as heat, restricted airflow, and natural light.

One of the standout features of this design is the incorporation of various landscaping elements, including green roofs, a rainforest pond, and a veggie pavilion. These additions not only enhance the visual appeal of the home but also provide a tranquil and sustainable environment for the clients to enjoy during their retirement years.

The choice of materials played a crucial role in highlighting the landscape elements. Plain off-form concrete, natural sandstone cladding, and large recycled timber beams were used to create a harmonious blend between the built environment and the surrounding nature. Additionally, motorized high-level windows and shutters were strategically placed to allow for ventilation while limiting the impact of the western sun.

The rainforest pond, a key feature of the design, is an Aquascape Ecosystem pond that operates on a low-maintenance, self-sustained basis. With a natural balance of circulation, filtration, plants, fish, rocks, and gravel, this pond adds a touch of serenity to the outdoor space. Its organic shape, approximately 9m x 9.7m and 600mm deep, seamlessly integrates with the surrounding landscape.

The Toowong Renovation project was not without its challenges. The design team had to overcome the intricacies of incorporating floating landscape concrete stairs over the rainforest pond, as well as ensuring the organic forms of the landscaping elements were meticulously executed. Additionally, selecting materials that complemented each other without competing was a task that required careful consideration.

The Toowong Renovation, with its innovative design and attention to detail, has received recognition in the form of the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious award acknowledges the outstanding creativity and resourcefulness demonstrated in this project, which contributes to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.

The Toowong Renovation, designed by Dion Seminara, is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and its ability to transform a space into a personalized haven. By embracing the unique characteristics of the site and incorporating sustainable elements, this residential home sets a new standard for future-proofed living.
