Facebook Museum: A Unique Online ASCII Digital Design Museum

Revolutionizing Art and Design on Social Media

While working on her M.A. degree in Multimedia at California State University, designer Rozita Sophia Fogelman found inspiration in Morse Code to create art and designs for visual communication on social media, specifically Facebook. As an eco-artist, she sought an eco-friendly tool that would allow her to produce art and graphics without consuming expensive art supplies or contributing to environmental pollution. This led her to create the ASCII Digital Design Museum, a contemporary online museum that showcases real-time designs created using simple text platforms with special characters and symbols.

The ASCII Digital Design Museum, also known as the Facebook Museum, is a novel and eco-friendly tool that generates designs and fine art in real-time on the web. By utilizing the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII), Fogelman creates instant designs with diverse graphic patterns using keyboard inputs. These designs are then streamed online, allowing users to interact with and modify them. The museum serves as a platform for artists and designers to share their work and engage with a global audience.

Over the course of five years, Fogelman documented the digital designs created on the Facebook page and compiled them into design books. The museum's Facebook page and the Computer Arts & Design group provide spaces for artists and designers to connect, collaborate, and explore the possibilities of ASCII art. The books, titled "ASCII Graphic Glitch Art Vol. #1" and "ASCII Graphic Glitch Art Vol. #2," further showcase the unique and innovative designs created through this medium.

The ASCII Digital Design Museum is not only a testament to Fogelman's creativity and technical skills but also a reflection of her commitment to sustainability. By utilizing digital platforms and eliminating the need for physical art supplies, the museum contributes to reducing waste and environmental impact. It serves as a prime example of how art and design can thrive in the digital age while promoting eco-friendly practices.

The Facebook Museum has gained recognition for its innovative approach to art and design on social media. It has been featured in various publications, including Experimental Film and Net Art, highlighting the creative use of Facebook as a medium and a source of artistic inspiration. The museum's success is a testament to the global community of artists who have embraced ASCII art as a valid and expressive form of visual communication.

With its real-time design capabilities and interactive nature, the ASCII Digital Design Museum has revolutionized the way art and design are created and shared on social media. It provides a platform for artists to showcase their work, engage with a global audience, and contribute to a more sustainable future. The museum's impact extends beyond the digital realm, inspiring artists and designers to explore new possibilities and push the boundaries of creativity.

As the recipient of the Iron A' Design Award in 2021, the Facebook Museum has been recognized for its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach to art and design. This prestigious award acknowledges the museum's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world through art and design.
