Rostrus: A Real-Life Film Set Inspired by Tolkien's World

Bringing Middle-Earth to Life with Traditional Techniques

For this project, designer Mark Melnikov drew inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien's books and The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. The goal was to create a new architectural set that would embody the artistic style of John Howe and meet the high standards set by Weta Workshop.

Despite the prevalence of computer-generated visual effects in today's film industry, Rostrus stands out as a real-life film set created using traditional techniques. This approach allows for a heightened sense of realism and immersion, which resonates with audiences. The meticulous attention to detail in the model gives it a plausible appearance, capturing the viewer's attention and drawing them into the world of Middle-Earth. Unlike computer-generated 3D models, this physical set is not only suitable for filming but can also be used for exhibitions, showcasing the craftsmanship and artistry behind the scenes.

The Rostrus model is crafted from a combination of medium-density fiberboard, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, and polyvinyl chloride. The set is molded and casted using poured plastic (SmoothCast), ensuring durability and precision.

With dimensions of 600mm (width) x 400mm (depth) x 760mm (height), Rostrus provides an ideal setting for professional high-resolution film cameras, allowing for seamless integration between actors and their surroundings.

The project, which commenced in April 2020 in Novosibirsk, was completed in September 2020, specifically for the A'Design Award Competition. During the pre-production phase, the design team extensively researched The Lord of the Rings films and studied original sketches by John Howe. This analysis enabled them to capture the architectural essence of Middle-Earth while adding their own unique touch.

Designing a landmark from a fantasy world presents its own set of challenges. The team had to strike a delicate balance between plausibility and impressiveness, ensuring that the design seamlessly fit into the cultural context of Middle-Earth. By adhering to a traditional approach, Rostrus successfully avoids any discordance between actors and the digital environment.

The Rostrus model, at a scale of 1:1000, boasts intricate detailing, allowing for close-up shots from as close as 2 centimeters to the surface. This level of precision enhances the visual experience and adds to the overall authenticity of the set.

Rostrus, created by Mark Melnikov, has been awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2021. This prestigious accolade recognizes designs that demonstrate exceptional creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. Rostrus not only showcases technical and creative prowess but also contributes to improving the quality of life, making the world a better place.
