Guo Fan, a captivating art installation and jewelry design, pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of Chaozhou overseas Chinese remittance. Created by renowned designer Yang Mai, this project delves into the history of Chaozhou overseas Chinese who ventured to Southeast Asia in search of a better life.
The inspiration for Guo Fan stems from the intricate Chaozhou gold lacquer wood carvings, which are emblematic of Chaoshan culture. These carvings, particularly the shrines, serve as important expressions of skill and carriers of the Chaozhou clan concept. The project aims to unearth the cultural stories inherent in Chaozhou wood carvings and their connection to overseas Chinese remittance.
What sets Guo Fan apart is its unique approach to storytelling. Through a combination of art installation and jewelry design, the project encapsulates the historical facets of the "culture of overseas Chinese remittance" and "Guo Fan." The art installation, derived from art jewelry, offers a holistic and experimental exploration of the historical facts surrounding this theme.
The art installation, with its two-way linkage spindle structure, symbolizes the infinite overlap of the historical facets. As the structure continuously turns, the stories of overseas Chinese remittance and Guo Fan intertwine, creating a mesmerizing visual experience.
The jewelry pieces, on the other hand, embody the concept of "slices of history." When worn, the jewelry transforms the wearer into the protagonist of these historical fragments, allowing them to immerse themselves in the stories of each slice. By wearing different parts of the jewelry, individuals can assume different roles within the same historical narrative.
Guo Fan was brought to life using a combination of materials, including brass, stainless steel, aluminum, resin, and acrylic. The production process involved laser cutting and 3D printing, showcasing the seamless integration of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology.
Measuring 278mm x 236mm x 149mm, the art installation serves as a captivating centerpiece, while the jewelry pieces come in various sizes, including 48mm x 68mm x 14mm, 45mm x 87mm x 7mm, 83mm x 141mm x 93mm, and 105mm x 40mm x 126mm.
Guo Fan made its debut at the Guangzhou Academic of Fine Arts in June 2021, captivating audiences with its intricate design and thought-provoking narrative. The project, which commenced in October in Guangzhou, was completed in May 2021, showcasing the dedication and meticulousness of the design team.
This exceptional design has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category. The award acknowledges Guo Fan's outstanding creativity and ingenious approach in authentically capturing the experience and resourcefulness of Chaozhou overseas Chinese remittance. By incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, Guo Fan contributes to the improvement of quality of life, making the world a better place.
