Inspired by the rhythm of life and the migratory patterns of birds, Yvon Chiu sought to create a space that suspends visitors from the reality of life, much like a migrating bird that changes with the seasons. Lake Shore Hotel, known for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, serves as the perfect stopping place for travelers, providing a sense of belonging.
The Crowd Gathering of Dots stands out from other art installations due to its unique properties and strengths. The installation features black glazed cells on handmade ceramic spheres, representing the differences between the diverse group of tourists who come to the hotel seeking warmth and comfort. Delicate bronze and gold feet hold up the ceramic spheres, allowing for a rich and three-dimensional play of light and shadow.
Using pre-planned walls, Yvon Chiu and his team were able to control the layout of the installation, ensuring the right proportion of units and creating a cohesive visual experience. The handmade ceramic balls, each with its own organic and unique characteristics, are covered in a glossy black glaze, reflecting the individuality of each visitor.
The design process presented its own set of challenges. However, with their experience in interior design and expertise in art installations, the team was able to overcome technical and creative obstacles. They successfully designed a point-to-point space that perfectly captures the essence of the installation and creates an ideal image for visitors.
The Crowd Gathering of Dots has garnered recognition and accolades in the design community. In 2022, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
The Crowd Gathering of Dots at Lake Shore Hotel is a testament to Yvon Chiu's artistic vision and his ability to create immersive and captivating spaces. It serves as a reminder that art, architecture, and design have the power to enhance our experiences and make the world a better place.
