Rims and Spokes: A Creative Coffee Table Design by Rashad Habib

An Innovative Blend of Functionality and Aesthetics

The Rims and Spokes coffee table stands out from other designs due to its innovative use of bicycle wheels. The top two circular wheels are welded at the center, while half rims and quarter rims are welded at two centers of the top wheels. Steel pieces in an "L" shape are added to stabilize and balance the glass on the top, creating a secure fixture.

With dimensions of 1340 mm x 700 mm x 460 mm, the Rims and Spokes coffee table is designed to fit seamlessly into various interior settings. Its chrome-transparent color scheme adds a touch of sophistication, making it a perfect centerpiece for any space. The table's height is deliberately etched to suit a relaxed floor seating setup, enhancing its versatility.

The Rims and Spokes coffee table project was completed in Hyderabad, India, from November 2021 to January 2022. Throughout the design process, Habib conducted extensive research on sustainable materials, ultimately choosing steel wheels with brass caps to prevent rusting and provide structural strength.

Overcoming challenges, such as balancing the circular glass fixture, Habib incorporated "L" shaped steel pieces to elevate and stabilize the glass, ensuring a secure and visually pleasing design. The result is a coffee table that combines innovation, simplicity, and functionality.

The Rims and Spokes coffee table has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2022. This prestigious award acknowledges the creativity and resourcefulness of the design, as well as its contribution to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
