Labyrinth: A Contemporary Chest of Drawers

An Architectural Masterpiece by Eckhard Beger

Labyrinth is a chest of drawers designed by Eckhard Beger, known for his innovative and sophisticated creations. With its intriguing appearance and unique conception, Labyrinth stands out as a true work of art in the world of furniture design.

Labyrinth is not your ordinary chest of drawers. Its contemporary and architectural appearance is enhanced by the meandering path of its veneer, reminiscent of the labyrinthine streets found in modern cities. The elegant outline of ArteNemus' creation is underlined by the high-quality wood and outstanding craftsmanship, resulting in a high-end piece that exudes sophistication and style.

The primary idea behind Labyrinth was to create a tower-shaped vertical chest of drawers with drawers that have both horizontal and vertical dimensions. This design choice adds a unique touch to the piece, making it stand out from traditional chest of drawers. The intricate veneer pattern, made from African Ebony and Maple, replicates the complexity and beauty of a city's labyrinth.

Labyrinth is meticulously crafted using a combination of wood and metal. The wood structure is covered with African Ebony and maple veneer, while the drawers are made from solid maple. Special attention is given to the application of the ebony veneer, considering its brittleness. To add functionality, the vertical part of the drawer can rotate by 60 degrees outwards, thanks to a metal mechanism.

Standing at a height of 177.6cm and with a width and depth of 49.8cm, Labyrinth is designed to be a free-standing piece or to fit into narrower spaces. Its drawers are spacious and designed to contain documents, making it a practical and stylish addition to any living or working space.

The journey of creating Labyrinth started in Geneva in the spring of 2014 and was completed in the same location in October of the same year. The design was recognized for its excellence and innovation, receiving a Finalists Award at the London International Creative Competition in 2014. Additionally, Labyrinth was awarded the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2015.

Eckhard Beger's inspiration for Labyrinth came from the world of complicated watches in the watch industry. Just like complicated watches are sought after for their aesthetics and mechanical complexity, Labyrinth aims to bring the concept of complexity and aesthetics into the realm of art furniture. The positive reactions from more than 10 people who have seen Labyrinth confirm the success of this approach, with appreciation increasing when the intricate drawer mechanisms are revealed.

Overcoming creative and technical challenges, Eckhard Beger successfully determined the final outline of the drawers and handles, ensuring an aesthetic front. Blending the veneer with the outlines of the drawers was another challenge, but it resulted in creating additional aesthetic tension and maintaining a connection with the meandering path of the veneer on the top of Labyrinth.

Labyrinth by ArteNemus is a true masterpiece that combines art, architecture, and design. Its meandering veneer, remarkable conception, and intricate mechanism make it a standout piece in any space. With its contrasting colors and high-quality craftsmanship, Labyrinth is a testament to Eckhard Beger's exceptional talent and creativity.
