Revitalizing a Shopping Mall with Urban Regeneration

The JF Modern Shopping Mall, located on Jiefang West Road in Yinchuan, has been a bustling commercial hub for the past decade. However, with the concept of "Urban Regeneration," the mall is undergoing a transformation to become a leader in modern city life. The design focuses on key elements such as the central shopping mall, interactive experience spaces, and a roof winter sunshine garden, all aimed at injecting new vitality into the city and pioneering new business models.

One of the unique features of this design is the use of low emissivity glass, which enhances the energy efficiency of the building. To maintain the original structure, a vertical facade system was designed to complement the vertical rhythm of the building. The final shape of the building, resembling a hyperboloid effect, was achieved using aluminum plates. Despite the use of economical materials, the design presents a captivating challenge.

The Yinchuan Jianfa Modern City spans a total gross floor area of 116,456 square meters, including 53,031 square meters of retail space and a 1,700 square meter roof garden. The facade area covers an impressive 16,000 square meters, ensuring a striking presence along the main road.

The design of the building takes into account the flow of pedestrians, directing them from the main street into the mall. The newly designed courtyard circulation guides visitors from the ground floor to the roof garden, creating a captivating experience under the skylight and through the illuminated facade.

The project, which commenced in July 2020, is set to be completed by September 2021. Located in Yinchuan, China, the design team conducted extensive research on urban regeneration, analyzing pedestrian flow and shopper behavior to enhance the aesthetic appeal and overall experience of the building.

Overcoming various creative, technical, and research challenges, the design successfully integrates different programs and circulation within the building, providing an improved shopping experience. The addition of the daylighting roof, partially connected to the existing tower, solves drainage and maintenance issues. The extensive renovation heavily relies on the existing structure, making attention to detail crucial for the facade design.

The Yinchuan Jianfa Modern City represents a new era for the shopping mall, introducing a modern and future-oriented style. The incorporation of interactive elements enhances the shopping experience, while the Winter Sunshine Roof Garden offers a tranquil space for visitors to enjoy the unique weather of Yinchuan.

This outstanding design by LnP Architects has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2021. This prestigious award celebrates designs that showcase creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
