Revolutionizing Time-Telling: The Jupiter Watch by Dabi Robert

Unveiling a Unique Timepiece: The Fusion of Art, Innovation, and Technology

Introducing the Jupiter Watch, a unique timepiece by Dabi Robert, that redefines the traditional concept of time-telling. This article explores the inspiration, design process, and unique features of this revolutionary wristwatch.

When Dabi Robert stumbled upon flux detector foil, a thin film that visually detects magnetic fields, he was inspired to create a magnetic watch. After several prototypes and iterations, this concept evolved into the Jupiter Watch, a minimalistic timepiece that uses a conventional watch movement to drive a unique planetary watch face. The watch's dial is elevated into the glass, giving the evolving spheres more significance.

What sets the Jupiter Watch apart from traditional timepieces is its unique design. Hours and minutes are represented by small steel spheres moving inside circular channels of the hydraulic pressed dial. There is no visible stem or watch hand. The glass dome covers the entire front-facing area of the watch, creating interesting light reflections.

The Jupiter Watch is realized through a unique production process. An additional layer of hydraulic pressed brass is used above the dial to separate the time indicators from the movement. The steel spheres are placed into these pressed rails and pulled by magnets underneath this layer. The magnets are powered by a conventional Swiss Ronda quartz watch movement.

The technical specifications of the Jupiter Watch are as impressive as its design. The casing is made of sandblasted 316L stainless steel. The watch dial is convex-shaped by hydraulic press and polished to a sandblasted finish. The watch also features a 316L stainless steel Milanese mesh strap, a concave polished hardened mineral crystal glass, and is water-resistant up to 5 ATM.

The Jupiter Watch offers a unique interaction with time. The two steel spheres indicate the current time, with the inner one showing minutes and the outer one showing hours. To keep the visual appearance minimal, there are no markers. When setting the time, the spheres have to be moved into the correct position in relation to the watch orientation.

The design project started in mid-2019 in Nuremberg, Germany, and Hong Kong. It was released for purchase in September 2020. In Japan, it was released through a crowdfunding campaign, which achieved 7000% funding. The Jupiter Watch was awarded the Golden A' Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design Award in 2021, a testament to its innovative design and unique time-telling mechanism.
