Revolutionizing Office Spaces: The EVD Office by Yang Bing and Hao Liyun

Blending Classical Aesthetics with Modern Design in a Unique Office Environment

Yang Bing and Hao Liyun have drawn inspiration from the classical architectural elements to shape the spatial form of the EVD office. The designers have created a U-shaped area that combines with one long side and the five large windows, allowing natural light to filter in and diffuse freely. The entrance protrudes towards the foyer, a design choice influenced by fire control regulations. The unique properties of this design lie in its classical language and the use of the sphere, the most beautiful solid figure, to enhance the spatial aesthetic. The designers elevated the area outside the door opening of the "garden" to create a natural height difference of sightline, endowing the space with fun and a sense of mystery. The design team has used classical architectural elements with modern approaches to add a sense of eternity to the space.

The realization of this design started with solving spatial limitations caused by pipes for fire protection and air conditioners in the original space. Such a design method can avoid repeated construction and resource wastes. 95% of walls use sustainable art paints, composed of shell powder and natural gums, harmless to the environment and convenient for construction. The office and exhibition area cover an area of 300 sqm.

The spatial form absorbs arched elements from Antonello da Messina's masterpiece "St. Jerome in His Study". In the painting, Messina depicted an "eternal" space that combines openness and privacy as well as fluidity and serenity by the use of arches, which can be seen on architectural and interior structures, landscape, and furniture. Based on 3D shapes, the design offers people a sense of participation and a playful perception.

The design project, which took place from April 2019 to September 2019 in Shanghai, faced challenges due to site limitations. The position of the foyer determined the location of the entrance. In addition, the structural framework and the five orderly window openings defined the placement of the wall. The challenge was how to allow light from the north naturally into the interior space. However, the designers overcame these challenges, resulting in a design that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and sustainable.

The EVD office design by Yang Bing and Hao Liyun was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021, a testament to their exceptional design skills and innovative approach. This design is indeed a trendsetting creation that reflects the designers' prodigy and wisdom, advancing art, design, and technology, and significantly impacting the world with its desirable characteristics.
