Light Field: A Renovated Residence Embracing Nature and Minimalism

Creating a Breathing House with Simple Designs and Abundant Natural Light

The Light Field project, designed by Kai Ling Huang, is a stunning renovation that embraces the essence of the original structure while infusing it with contemporary design elements. This residence showcases the beauty of life at home through its innovative construction methods and thoughtful designs.

The design team behind Light Field aimed to restore the space's inherent qualities and create a seamless connection between the interior and exterior. By opening up closed barriers and incorporating penetrating media, such as glass, the house is flooded with an abundance of sunlight and natural wind. This creates a breathing house that allows residents to relax and savor the beauty of life within their own home.

One of the standout features of Light Field is the staircase, which serves as a central element that connects various areas of the house. The stairs are lined with black backing and neat lines, complemented by unique lighting that highlights the mainline running through the two floors and the mezzanine. This design choice not only adds visual interest but also enhances the overall harmony and flow of the space.

The use of materials in Light Field is a blend of contemporary and traditional elements. The designers incorporated post-made clear water mold, board with holes, hexagonal tiles, glass, wood grain brick, Lotos, close lightly pebble, and solid wood steps. The inclusion of close lightly pebble, a material commonly used in early Taiwan, adds a warm and rustic touch to the space, evoking a sense of nostalgia and creating a connection to the past.

The Light Field residence spans a floor area of 115.703 square meters and features a two-story layout with a mezzanine. The original structural body was retained, but the worn-out surfaces were removed and replaced with reinforced steel structures and post-made clear water molding methods. The facade is layered with concrete, close lightly pebble, and protective paint, providing temperature resistance, dirt resistance, and aesthetic appeal.

Light Field is a testament to the successful integration of old and new. The design team skillfully balances the proportions and maintains the harmony between the original structure and contemporary additions. By injecting the soul and charm of the old building into the new space, Light Field exudes a poetic and spiritual beauty that is truly captivating.

The Light Field project was completed in June 2020 in Lingya District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. It has received recognition for its exceptional design, winning the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award is a testament to the project's well-designed, practical, and innovative nature.
