Qube Shanghai: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

Yue Ding and Jun Chao's Award-Winning Design: A New Dimension in Luxury Hotels

Qube Shanghai, a luxury hotel designed by Yue Ding and Jun Chao, is a perfect blend of traditional Jiangqiao culture and modern art. The design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021, offers an unprecedented experience to its guests.

The hotel's design is inspired by the "Jiangqiao memory," a concept that integrates the unique cultural charm of Jiangqiao with modern fashion art. The lobby of the hotel is the main conceptual clue, with bridge-structured columns, large scale empty space, and water texture changes reflected from the ground to simulate the water surface, fully embodying the prosperous life culture scene of Jiangqiao in ancient times.

Qube Shanghai is a high-end business brand owned by the Greenland Hotel and Tourism Group. The hotel is strategically located in the Jiading District of Shanghai, close to the Hongqiao traffic hub, and connected to the Airport Economic Park. The location is a historical intersection of sea and land transport in China, providing the hotel with a unique geographical advantage.

The design of the hotel lobby is inspired by a rice bucket, a symbol of good harvest. The high corridor of the lobby is expressed in a fashionable and tensile orange color. The bottom of the bucket is opened in the form of a window, providing a panoramic view of a small bridge and flowing water, evoking infinite memories. The towering art bookshelves are staggered with the reception seats to create a diversified space. The reception desk under the bridge follows the beauty of Chinese symmetry, and its shiny surface is designed to attract customers.

The hotel offers a 600-square-meter multi-functional banquet hall and five small and medium-sized conference rooms, catering to various activities and providing diverse experiences to customers based on distinct themes. The Chinese food area is designed under the concept of characteristic courtyards in the south of the Yangtze River, separating the space with folding screens.

The project, which started in February 2015 in Shanghai and finished in September 2019 in North Hongqiao Shanghai, faced several challenges. The lobby, only six meters high, was a narrow and long space, which posed difficulties in enhancing the quality of space experience. However, through innovative design techniques, these challenges were successfully overcome.

The color palette of the project is a subtle grey with a touch of Qube Hermes Orange and Champagne Gold. The hotel is themed on the concept of "Searching for the Memory of Jiangqiao", carrying the unique historical and cultural charm of Jiangqiao. The perfect fusion of modern fashion and traditional culture, along with the experience of artistic expression, makes Qube Shanghai a remarkable stop in the life of its guests.
