MODE: A Modular Workstation for Healthier Home Office

Optimizing Workspaces with Creativity and Comfort

A design solution that addresses the health consequences due to bad posture and social isolation, potentialized in the Covid-19 pandemic situation, where home office activities have increased fairly. The home comfort is conducive to harmful postures to the spine, due to activities performed in irregular postures, which can, in the long run, mark young people for the rest of their lives. Furthermore, this scenario may lead people to develop mental health issues, increasing discomfort and low life quality. The research base for this project was interviews with users, analysis of work environments, benchmarking, and ergonomic Brazilian standards.

Gustavo Miranda and Silas Stempcoski, the designers behind MODE, have created a modular workstation that aims to optimize the home office workplace while promoting healthier posture habits. Unlike traditional office furniture, MODE brings a creative and fun side to the home environment, encouraging users to work in more suitable positions.

One of the unique features of MODE is its modular design. The workstation consists of three modules: a table, a seat, and a kneeling module. These modules can be used in different ways, allowing users to customize their workspace according to their preferences and needs.

When in compact mode, MODE functions as a side table, adjusting itself to the user's environment, whether it's beside their bed or sofa. This versatility promotes a greater feeling of coziness and encourages the use of the workstation. To use the seat, simply pull the chair from under the table. The kneeling module can be unlocked by pressing the lower button, allowing it to be pulled with ease. This module can also be used as a rocking chair, tilting back and forth to provide different seating positions.

In addition to its modular design, MODE also prioritizes ergonomic standards. The user's work surface is 580 mm wide and 600 mm deep, providing ample space for work activities. The seat is designed to accommodate the user's hips comfortably, with a 100-degree inclination of the backrest and 180 mm for correct lumbar support, complying with Brazilian standards. The kneeling position of MODE ensures the correct angulation for the user's legs, with a seat height of 500 mm and knee inclination according to the standards of the furniture market for this purpose.

The realization of MODE involves the use of carbon steel tubes with rectangular sections for the structure of all the modules. Molded multi-laminated plywood sheets are used for the base of the seat, the kneeling module, and the tabletop. The upholstery features a plywood base filled with 33 density foam, which can be covered with different types of fabrics.

Since its introduction in November 2020, MODE has garnered attention and recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2021, which recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. MODE's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world by providing fulfillment and positive feelings.

MODE is not just a workstation; it is a solution that promotes better posture, creativity, and comfort in the home office environment. By offering a modular and ergonomic design, it empowers users to optimize their workspaces and improve their overall well-being.
