Monologue is a collection of garments that prioritize functionality and protection. Each piece is constructed using traditional tailoring techniques, with inspiration drawn from engineering methods found in children's pop-up books. The result is a series of transformable garments that seamlessly integrate lightweight, expandable spaces.
One standout piece in the collection is a dress that can be transformed into a sleeping bag, providing a portable and comfortable space for rest. Jackets with built-in face coverings offer both protection and style, while tops expand into tents, allowing wearers to create a private sanctuary wherever they go. The garments are crafted in calming monochrome fabrics and feature psychologically soothing imagery within the expanded spaces.
To ensure stability and structure, each garment is constructed with different under fabric structures. Neoprene with fusible, double-bonded silk-wool blend, cotton twill fused with horsehair and batting, and wool fused with horsehair provide the necessary support for the pop-up silhouettes. The lining prints are hand-painted with Gouache and digitally repeated in Photoshop before being printed on silk crepe and poly charmuese.
The collection consists of five looks in size 6, each offering a unique transformation and personal space. Despite the experimental concept, the designs are highly wearable due to the use of strictly tailoring materials. The garments can be adjusted to fit the wearer's emotional state and desired level of privacy.
Monologue was developed by designer Joyce Li and completed in August 2020. The collection is currently exhibited on "Here and Now," a digital celebration created by Parsons School of Design in collaboration with Solange's Saint Heron.
Li's research for Monologue drew inspiration from children's pop-up books, which create immersive and imaginative worlds. By expanding the garments like a book, the collection aims to transform the wearer into their own tranquil headspace. The collection is a testament to the power of fashion beyond garments, embedding little surprises and emphasizing the importance of self-care.
Monologue faced several challenges in its realization. Precise measurements and accurate patterns were crucial to ensure the stability and smooth expansion of the pop-up spaces. Material choices were also carefully considered, with fabrics specifically engineered to sustain the function of each design. Through trial and error, Li successfully designed a series of fabrics and supports for each look.
Monologue has been recognized for its innovative design and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fashion, Apparel, and Garment Design category in 2021. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
Monologue is a testament to the power of fashion to provide comfort, protection, and self-expression. By incorporating transformative elements and portable safe spaces, Joyce Li has created a collection that resonates with the need for privacy and stability in an increasingly oppressive world.
