Sunflower: A Blossoming Art Education Center

Pan Mok's Award-Winning Design Transforms Learning Space

Inspired by the vibrant colors and natural beauty of sunflowers, designer Pan Mok has created a unique and engaging space for art education. The Sunflower Art Education Center, a winner of the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021, is a testament to the power of design in shaping educational environments.

Pan Mok's inspiration for the Sunflower Art Education Center came from the desire to create an open space for a professional art school. The sunflower's color was chosen as the main theme of the design, with the purity of white, red, blue, and yellow serving as the basic color tones. These colors are intended to stimulate imagination and open up the possibility of creating more art.

The Sunflower Art Education Center is designed to ensure that all students receive quality arts education, with programming that includes creative drawing, music, dance, theater, and visual arts. The design's unique features include a 6M height full height laminated glass with sunflower's color to present its existence, a design choice that is both eye-catching and representative of the center's mission.

The realization of the design was a meticulous process. A 10mm x 10mm x 7M height laminated glass was made, with the color being the critical part. Over 20 samples were submitted to control the color variation, ensuring that the final product was as vibrant and engaging as the initial concept.

The design team faced several challenges during the project. One of the main challenges was building the mezzanine floor, which required new metal structure posts to support the new floor. The team wanted to keep the first-floor ceiling height as high as possible, which made minimizing the Mechanical and Engineering services difficult. A specially made air-conditioning duct was created for the project to overcome this challenge.

The Sunflower Art Education Center is a shining example of how design can transform educational spaces. By using the unique form and color of sunflowers, Pan Mok and his team have created an interesting and engaging space for students to express their imagination. The project, which started in August 2020 in Shanghai and finished in January 2021, is a testament to the power of design in shaping our world.
