Revolutionizing Time-Telling: The Lunar Watch by Dabi Robert

Award-Winning Timepiece Redefines Conventional Watch Design

Introducing the Lunar, a groundbreaking wristwatch by Dabi Robert that challenges traditional time-telling methods. This innovative design, which won the Golden A' Jewelry, Eyewear and Watch Design Award in 2021, combines art, technology, and fashion to redefine the concept of a wristwatch.

The Lunar watch was inspired by the desire to create a flat, graphical way of displaying time, transforming the watch face into a constantly changing canvas without compromising readability. Using flat coloured semi-circles on solid metal discs, the design pushes the boundaries of graphical minimalism. The Lunar watch is more than just a time-telling device; it's a quality piece that emphasizes the fun aspect of watches.

What sets the Lunar watch apart is its unconventional method of time display. Two interlocking half circles show the time, with the correct side of the semi-circle determined by its natural clockwise rotation. The minute disc is embedded into the hour disc, aligning both discs at the same height level. This unique feature reflects the brand's emphasis on innovative and fun ways of telling time over absolute precision.

The Lunar watch was meticulously crafted to create a watch face where the entire surface is a changing pattern in the most minimal way. The design is tied intimately to the product, with the graphical design of the watch face linked to the watch's clockwise movement. This design wouldn't work in a world where some watches go clockwise and others counter-clockwise.

The Lunar watch boasts a casing material of 316L stainless steel, a case size thickness of 9.8 mm, and a width of 41 mm. The hands are made of aluminium, anodised and printed in various colours. The watch dial is hidden behind the hands and printed black. The strap is a 316L stainless steel Milanese mesh, and the watch uses a Japanese MIYOTA Quartz movement. The watch is water-resistant up to 5 ATM.

Setting the time on the Lunar watch involves pulling out and turning the crown. The outer disc shows the hour, and the inner one shows the minutes. To maintain a minimal visual appearance, there are no markers. When setting the time, the light semi-circle tip must be moved into the correct position in relation to the watch orientation. The correct semi-circle is the one moving towards the clockwise direction.

The Lunar watch project began in 2016 in Germany and Hong Kong, and it took about a year to finalize the product. However, due to technical complications, a revised version was released in 2020. The design faced several challenges, including the need to use brass discs to embed the inner disc into the outer one. The heavier metallic discs posed a problem for the torque and the fixation on the stem, which was resolved by removing non-visible material from the underlying disc and applying another miniature disc from the top.

The Lunar watch is a testament to the brand's commitment to unique ways of telling time. It's not just a time teller but a status symbol and a fashion accessory. The design reflects the brand's understanding of the evolving role of a traditional wrist watch and its commitment to cater to the creative industry. The Lunar watch is a revolutionary timepiece that redefines conventional watch design, offering a unique, fun, and innovative way of telling time.
