Devi Ratn: A Gem of Boutique Hotel Design

Designer Khozema Chitalwala Blends Heritage and Futuristic Vision

The design inspiration for Devi Ratn was drawn from the hotel's name, which translates to 'gem'. The design team decided to work around the 'gem' theme while justifying the eminence of the parent brand. The result is a hotel that narrates a story of the heritage-rich city of Jaipur, set against the scenic views of the Aravalli Hills, while incorporating a futuristic design vision.

The uniqueness of Devi Ratn lies in its bold, big, and captivating design elements that subtly incorporate regional nuances. This is evident in the glistening ceiling design and lighting elements, colourful hues, and a composition of vibrant decor items, furniture configurations, and customized soft furnishings that depict Rajasthani culture.

The technology used in the design of Devi Ratn is primarily focused on sustainability and viability. The extensive use of green materials like fibre cement boards and stone laminates was incorporated. The existing doors, which were fabricated with veneer finishes and exposed to the external environment, were replaced with UV boards that offer energy efficiency, insulation, high quality, low maintenance, longevity, and recyclability. Washable and sterile digital eco-friendly customised wallpapers were also used.

The design process for Devi Ratn was not without its challenges. The lobby design was particularly challenging due to the existing red chevron pattern flooring and the red GRC architectural envelope. To counteract the impact of red, the lobby was transformed into an assortment of colourful hues through the composition of vibrant décor items, furniture configurations, lighting elements, and customized soft furnishings inspired by peacocks and butterflies from the Bharatpur sanctuary.

Devi Ratn is not just a hotel, but an experience. With its design, geometry, and surreal experiences, it leaves a long-lasting impression on visitors' minds. The hotel is a testament to the power of innovative design and the use of sustainable materials, and it's no surprise that it was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021.
