Sista House: A Unique Rental Housing for Women in Seoul

A Comfortable and Sensuous Living Environment

Sinsu-dong, a neighborhood in Seoul known for its dangerous residential area with many old houses, has been transformed by the innovative design of Sista House. Designed by Junghee Lee, this rental housing project aims to provide a comfortable and sensuous living environment for young women in their 20s and 30s.

The first impression of Sista House is that of a red brick castle, giving it a strong and secure presence. However, once inside, the interior reveals a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The design team at 2m2 architects wanted to create a space that would make women feel safe and at home.

What sets Sista House apart from other housing options in the area is its unique composition. Each household within the building has its own character, catering to the diverse tastes of its female residents. From one-room houses to houses with outside yards and houses with high ceilings, there is something for everyone.

The common staircase in Sista House is a standout feature. Designed with rough exposed concrete walls and stone burner floor finishing, it embraces simplicity and reveals the natural texture of the materials. The staircase facing the road serves as a private space outside the building, providing both light and ventilation while maintaining privacy.

Despite facing challenges during the design and construction process, the team at 2m2 architects persevered. The land contract for the project was initially uncertain, but they were able to secure it and collaborate with young architects to bring their vision to life. The narrow width of the road bordering the site posed another obstacle, reducing the actual area of the building. However, these challenges were overcome, and Sista House now stands as a testament to the team's determination and creativity.

Sista House was completed in February 2020 after a year-long project. Located in Seoul, South Korea, it has become a symbol of transformation and revitalization in the Sinsu-dong neighborhood.

The innovative design of Sista House has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This award celebrates designs that exhibit technical and creative excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

Sista House is not just a rental housing project; it is a testament to the power of design to create safe and inspiring spaces for women. With its comfortable and sensuous living environment, it has become a beacon of hope and transformation in the heart of Seoul.
