Green Light Forest: An Ecological Exhibition by Hung Yi-An

Award-winning design merges nature, culture, and technology in a unique exhibition space

In the heart of South Western China's Fairy Mountain National Park, a unique exhibition hall stands as a testament to the fusion of art, architecture, and technology. The Green Light Forest, designed by Hung Yi-An, is more than just a tourist center; it's a hub for ecological education and a celebration of the park's natural beauty.

The design of the Green Light Forest was inspired by the natural mountainous landscape and local cultural myths. The architecture mimics the shape of the mountains, creating a distinct triangular interior realm for the exhibition. This space is brought to life by a zigzag, three-dimensional ribbon that flows through the space, reflecting the local Fairy Ribbon legend. This innovative design provides visitors with a mysterious and aesthetic spatial experience.

The exhibition hall is divided into four color-coded areas, each representing a different aspect of the park's ecology. The red ribbon at the entrance welcomes visitors, while the green area educates them about the formation of the forest and local habitats. The blue area introduces the park's unique geological features, and the yellow area highlights the importance of climate change and nature preservation.

What sets the Green Light Forest apart is its innovative use of technology. The exhibition elements are cantilevered from the ceiling, providing ample space for visitors while creating an engaging viewing experience. The exhibition utilizes laser printers, LED displays, and interactive sensors to offer a modern, flexible exhibition experience. The facade of the cantilever elements is made of printable PVC membranes, enhancing the design outcome while keeping construction costs economical.

The project was realized between December 2017 and October 2020, with the design team including Hung Yi-An, Chen Li-Yu, and Ming-Chieh Kao. The team faced several challenges, including fitting the flowing design element into the architectural interior and integrating high-tech exhibition features for future content changes. Despite these challenges, the team successfully executed a creative and interactive exhibition center that enhances visitor experience and promotes ecological preservation.

In recognition of its innovative design and contribution to ecological education, the Green Light Forest was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that showcase outstanding expertise and innovation.
